Short Fiction
“Death Car Alley,” February 2012, from Jersey Devil Press issue 27. Speculative, dark urban fantasy, with hints of a monster-apocalypse and a dash of tongue-in-cheek. 3,900 words. With thanks to Yvonne Anisimowicz and Dabs Lyons for the beta.
The wolves are out in their death car again, a sleek, slow curb crawl, prowling cracked pavements for signs of life, for meaty flesh to make meaty breath, and they’re hungry.
“Dust City,” (forthcoming) Darwin’s Evolutions, 2012. Dark, urban fantasy, with elements of mild horror. May contain vampires. Features stunning cover art by Karl A. Nordman. 10,900 words.
Some years ago they came up with this sweet idea of using stakes on retractable rods to avoid close proximity jobs, but Health and Safety decided it was too dangerous—too freaking dangerous! Because a stake in the hand is way safer than a stake on a stick. Yeah. Right.
Flash Fiction
These are short stories, drabbles, or snippets I’ve posted on my blog. Most of them are writing exercises based on Storyslingers prompts.
Captain Hollington tilted the specs up and narrowed his eyes. “Now tell me, how old are you really?” When the boy didn’t answer, he added, “Come now, the Boers are close. I’m not going to toss you from the gondola this late in the game.”
“Mundane,” November 2011. Light sci-fi, 430 words.
Mundane (pop. 1,112), Dorset, is a dense little market town hunkered in a crescent of rollercoaster hills and sparsely freckled woodland. Its only claim to fame, aside from its generous turn-out of livestock, is that it’s a well-documented UFO hotspot.
“For Fork’s Sake,” November 2011. Paranormal (kind of), 950 words.
“Nah. Look, I’ll give most professionals a chance, but I’ve got to draw the line somewhere, and right now I’m drawing it at tall, psychokinetic Israeli nutjobs.”
@yaoisex I had a feeling that might be the case. :) Evil social networking! xx - 2 weeks ago
